Allergies stink, but atleast I got a pie.

For someone with a food allergy, the unknown is terrifying. Will you spend the entire week on your cruise starving? Should you bring food on the ship with you incase you can't eat anything? What if you get sick on the cruise? Will the chefs/waiters take your allergy seriously?

I'm here to tell you, on my very first cruise I had all of those questions and MORE! I took SO MUCH food with us...enough for a week of breakfast, lunches and snacks....I figured if nothing else, I could eat a plain steak for dinner every single night.

Other than a couple of blogs from my friend, I didn't have a lot of info about cruising with food allergies the first time. I would have done a few things different if I would have known. On my second cruise, I did do some things different. The managers are your friends, the chefs are your friends and the waiters are your best friends. On our second cruise with Carnival...I mentioned to our headwaiter that I would LOVE a whole pie for dessert the next night. I was joking (not really) So what did I have waiting on me the next night for dinner? An ENTIRE blueberry pie! It was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Did I share it with my family? I sure did not. They gave me a lid and I took it back to our cabin and ate off of it the rest of the week! There wasn't even a crumb left. Do I feel bad I ate an ENTIRE pie in less than four days?? Not even a little bit.

Now, even though everything felt safe and the chef and the headwaiter took everything SUPER serious...sometimes mistakes can be made. One night one of our waiters brought out ice cream on my plate. I asked about it, then asked again....then asked him to ask the chef. It WAS NOT dairy free. I am glad I questioned him, and was an advocate for my food safety. He was not our headwaiter, and did not have a clear concept of my food allergies. Many of our waiters did not speak English fluently, so if you are concerned....make sure you find someone to ask!

My dairy free/gluten free blueberry pie I got for dinner- made by the allergy chef, requested by our head waiter. The original dessert for this night was an apple pie. While I can eat cooked apples (not fresh) being in the middle of the ocean and having a reaction was not something I wanted to test out. I told them I would eat ANY pie other than apple...and blueberry is a close second to my favorite- cherry!
